Hex Bolts
Description
Technical Parameters
There are two types of hex bolts: outer hexagon bolts and inner hexagon screws.
There are two types of connections in the force bearing method: ordinary ones and those with hinged holes. When it comes to hinged holes, it is crucial to use bolts that match the size of the holes, especially when they will be subjected to lateral force. The bolts serve the purpose of receiving and distributing this force effectively. Head shapes also play a significant role in the connection process. There are various options to consider, such as hexagonal head, round head, square head, and countersunk head. Each head shape has its own advantages and applications. For instance, the countersunk head is ideal for smooth surfaces where a flush connection is desired, as it can be screwed into the part. Similarly, the round head can also be screwed into the part. On the other hand, the square head allows for a stronger tightening force, but it is relatively larger in size. However, the most commonly used head shape is the hex head, which offers a good balance of size and functionality.
To cater to the requirement of ensuring proper locking of the bolt after installation, the head, as well as the rod, features strategically placed holes. These holes offer an additional level of security by preventing the bolt from getting loose due to vibrations or other external factors. This feature is essential in ensuring that the bolt remains firmly in place and doesn't compromise the overall integrity of the structure it is supporting. Consequently, the holes serve as an important safeguard against potential hazards that might arise due to a loose or improperly secured bolt.
Introduction
As the name suggests, hexagon head screws and large hexagon bolts are externally threaded fasteners with a hexagonal head, designed to be turned using a wrench. According to the ASME B18.2.1 standard, hex head screws have tighter tolerances for head height and stem length compared to ordinary large hexagon bolts. This means that ASME B18.2.1 hex screws are suitable for installation in situations where any type of hex bolt can be used, including large hex bolts that may be too big for certain applications.
The hexagon socket screw is designed with a round outer edge and a recessed hexagon in the middle, while the hexagonal screw features a hexagonal side on the screw head. To tighten or loosen a hexagon socket screw, a hexagon socket screwdriver is required, which typically has a '7' shape to fit into the screw's hexagonal shape. For those who prefer a different tool, a hexagonal steel bar can be cut and bent into a 90-degree angle to create a customized hexagon socket screw wrench. These wrenches are commonly available for purchase at hardware stores.
At the electronics market, you can find specialized screwdrivers for mobile phones sold at the repair tools stalls. It's important to note that the hexagon socket screwdriver is not the designated tool for mobile phone repairs.
Hexagon socket screws are widely utilized in machinery due to their ease of fastening, disassembling, and resistance to slippage. The Allen wrenches commonly used with these screws are typically bent at a 90° angle. One end of the bend is longer while the other is shorter. When using the shorter side for screwing, gripping the longer side can significantly save force and provide a tighter grip. Furthermore, the longer end of the wrench features a round head resembling a hexagonal cylinder with a flat head. This design allows for easy diagonal insertion and disassembly, particularly in areas where a regular wrench would be impractical to use. The manufacturing cost of the outer hexagon screws is notably lower compared to their inner hexagon counterparts. Their advantage lies in the thinner screw head, where the wrench is stressed, and in situations where the inner hexagon cannot be substituted. Moreover, the use of inner hexagon screws is considerably less in machines that prioritize low cost, low power strength, and low precision requirements.
Socket head screws, also known as hexagon socket head screws or Allen bolts, are widely used in various applications. These screws have a unique design featuring a hexagonal inner hole on the head, which allows them to be tightened or loosened using a hexagonal ruler.
The most commonly used type of socket head screw is the cylindrical head screw, which has a head diameter approximately 1.5 times larger than the main diameter of the thread. This particular design, known as the 1960 series, provides a sturdy and secure hold when fastening objects together.
In addition to cylindrical head screws, there are other head types available. Button head screws, for example, are preferred when a visually pleasing surface is desired. These screws have a rounded head that blends seamlessly with the surrounding material once tightened. On the other hand, flat head screws are suitable for tapered screw holes, as they sit flush with the surface when fully inserted.
One notable advantage of socket head screws is their counterbore design. This design allows the screw head to rotate within a recessed area, preventing it from being exposed on the surface of the fixed object. As a result, these screws are commonly used in applications where the surface area is limited, or when using a traditional wrench is impractical.
Overall, socket head screws offer versatility, reliability, and an efficient fastening solution for a wide range of applications. Whether it's securing machinery, assembling furniture, or constructing delicate electronic devices, these screws provide a dependable and easily adjustable solution.
Hex Bolt Material
At present, there are three main materials for hexagon socket screws on the market: carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper.
(1) Carbon steel. We distinguish low carbon steel, medium carbon steel and high carbon steel and alloy steel by the carbon content in the carbon steel material.
1. Low carbon steel C%≤0.25% is usually called A3 steel in China. Foreign countries are basically called 1008, 1015, 1018, 1022 and so on. It is mainly used for products without hardness requirements such as grade 4.8 bolts, grade 4 nuts, and small screws (Note: 1022 material is mainly used for drilling screws).
2. Medium carbon steel 0.25% 0.45%. It is basically not used in the market at present.
3. Alloy steel: Add alloy elements to ordinary carbon steel to increase some special properties of steel: such as 35, 40 chromium molybdenum, SCM435, 10B38. Fangsheng screws mainly use SCM435 chrome-molybdenum alloy steel, the main components are C, Si, Mn, P, S, Cr, Mo.
(2) Stainless steel. Performance grade: 45, 50, 60, 70, 80 Mainly divided into austenite (18%Cr, 8%Ni), good heat resistance, good corrosion resistance, good weldability. A1, A2, A4 Martensite, 13%Cr has poor corrosion resistance, high strength and good wear resistance. C1, C2, C4 ferritic stainless steel. 18%Cr has better upsetting forgeability and stronger corrosion resistance than martensite. At present, imported materials on the market are mainly Japanese products. According to the level, it is mainly divided into SUS302, SUS304 and SUS316.
(3) Copper. Commonly used materials are brass-zinc-copper alloys. H62, H65 and H68 copper are mainly used as standard parts in the market. Plates used in carbon steel products: No. Type Available materials 1 Grade 4.8 hexagonal screw 1008K 1010 1015K 2 Grade 6.8 hexagonal screw.
Application field
1. Ordinary external hexagon - it is widely used. It is characterized by relatively large fastening force. The disadvantage is that there must be enough operating space during installation. You can use adjustable wrench or open-end wrench during installation, or the wrench above the glasses wrench requires a lot of time. Large operating space.
2. Cylindrical head hexagon socket - is the most widely used of all screws, because its fastening force is relatively large, it can be operated with a hexagonal wrench, it is very convenient to install, it is used in almost all kinds of structures, and its appearance is more beautiful and tidy. The disadvantage is that the fastening force pin is lower than the outer hexagon, and the inner hexagon is easily damaged by repeated use, making it impossible to disassemble.
3. Pan head inner hexagon - rarely used in machinery, with the same mechanical properties as above, mostly used in furniture, the main function is to increase the contact surface with wooden materials and increase the ornamental appearance.
4. Headless inner hexagon - it must be used in some structures, such as the top screw structure that requires a large jacking force, or where the cylindrical head needs to be hidden.
5. Countersunk head inner hexagon - mostly used in power machinery, the main function is the same as the inner hexagon
6. Nylon lock nut - a structure inlaid with a nylon rubber ring in the hexagonal surface to prevent the thread from loosening, and is used on strong power machinery.
7. Flange nuts - mainly to increase the contact surface with the workpiece, mostly used in pipelines, fasteners and some stamping parts and castings.
8. Ordinary outer hexagon nuts - the most versatile and generally one of the most common fasteners.
